How trials work
From a study protocol to a study visit
Every step below happens with the independent program running the study. This website is a reading and discovery resource, and it never screens, enrolls, or decides anything.

A study is designed and reviewed
A research team writes a protocol describing the question being studied, who the study is looking for, and what participants would be asked to do. An independent ethics board reviews it before anyone is enrolled.

Opportunities are published
Study locations publish listings describing the study type, the general expectations, and the visit schedule. We describe those general categories in plain language so listings are easier to read.

You express interest
Interest is simply a message saying you would like to learn more. It is not enrollment, and it does not make you eligible for anything.

The independent program reviews fit
The study team, never this website, reviews whether their study is a fit. They set their own criteria and can accept or decline anyone.

Informed consent happens
If a study looks like a fit, the team walks through the consent document in detail. You can ask questions, take it home, and decline.

Study visits follow a schedule
Visits, check-ins, and any activities follow the schedule written into the protocol. You may stop taking part at any time.
Study phases
What the phases usually mean
Early stage
Smaller groups, close monitoring, and a focus on safety and how something behaves in the body.
Middle stage
Larger groups and a closer look at how well something works under a defined plan.
Later stage
Broader groups, longer follow-up, and comparison of results across many participants.
